Notes for William Christopher Scarborough/Scarberry:
After William Christopher's (Chris) parents died, he stayed in
different places, working for his board. He never went to school,
though he could read and write. He always wanted to go to school
but was never able.
When he was 12 or 13, a farmer told him if he would work for him
all summer, in the fall he would pay for Chris to go to school.
Chris worked for him all summer for board and keep, then in the
fall the farmer refused to send Chris to school and threw him
out.
Chris never forgot this and in later years when one of his
daughters wanted to go out with one of the farmer's sons, Chris
said 'No way, we don't have nothing to do with them.' That ended
that.
Chris married Mary Elizabeth Bach/Back Jan.5,1903. They were
married by Jos F, Monison, MG at David Bach's. Witness were Amos
Lawson and M.H. Helton.
Sometime after Chris' marriage to Mary Bach, the spelling of the
family name was changed to SCARBEARY,
About 1923 Chris moved his family to Kimmel, Indiana where he
worked as a mint and onion tenant farmer.
Children of William Scarborough/Scarberry and Mary Bach/Back are:
i. Zelma Scarberry/Scarbeary, born May 18, 1904 in KY; married Newt Spencer
Notes for Newt Spencer:
He used to like carving wood. I (Peggy Lynn Laramore) can remember him carving
chains, horses & a wagon, crosses and lots of other things. He was a very
special person in my life when I was younger. The chains he used to carve were
made from one peice of wood that the links were each carved so that they hooked.
